This is a painting about life and death. It is based on the children's nursery rhyme Oranges and Lemons the Bells of St Clements. The Mexican papermache puppet refers to the Day of the Dead while the white cloth is variously a wedding veil or a child's crib curtain. The card refers to the game of cards we are handed in life, while the oranges and lemons are the citrus fruit of the rhyme. The end of the rhyme goes 'and here comes a chopper to chop off your head' and in the childrens game they must do their best to escape.
